Do you wonder why people hate their jobs? Are you tired of working long hours to fill the pockets of company owners? Do you want to escape the rat race and have your life back on your terms? Is your boss an arsehole? Burnout? Fed up of being told to ‘go the extra mile for pitiful pay? Let’s dive into this...
Goldman Sachs: Why People Hate Their Corporate Jobs
The recent
Goldman Sachs’ story showed why people hate their corporate jobs. Working 95 hour weeks leads to burnout, so there is growing demand to to escape the rat race and corporate slavery.
The shocking story broke in late March about 12 Goldman Sachs’ employees who endured:
1) Five hours sleep a night
2) Bad treatment by corporate bankers
3) Intense effects on their mental and physical wellbeing
In a BBC article, one employee said it was ‘arguably worse’ than the experience they had in ‘foster care’ and another said the working conditions were ‘inhumane/abuse’.
Digital Marketing Exploitation
Also, recently the BBC ran an article on a woman of 22 who had worked in a
Digital Marketing company. She was expected to work 12 hours a day Monday to Saturday in a ‘cult-like environment’. In the end, she quit and now she is working 37 hours a week in a civil service job. She has her life back. Stories like this show just why people hate their jobs and strive to escape the rat race.
Corporate Slavery is not New!
Now hold on a second; this story isn’t new. In
2017 a Gallup poll across the world showed that a staggering 85% of people hated their jobs and in particular their boss.
That meant only 15% in the world felt engaged in their jobs. Gallup drew the conclusion that it was largely due to management from the baby boomer generation failing to engage and meet the needs of their younger staff. So just why do people hate their jobs and seek to escape the rate race?
7 Reasons Why People Hate Their Jobs
‘
My boss is an arsehole!’
How many times have you heard that said? No one wants to spend time with someone they don’t like. Getting up early in the morning and working long hours for someone you despise and who doesn’t care for you is a total motivation killer.
Colleagues
As hard as you try there will always be people at work you can’t get on with. Going to work and being with people you simply can’t stand is slow torture. If you had your own
online business, you could choose who you work with.
Cognitive Dissonance
Your dreams may be sucked dry and spat out by the grey corporate machine. Cognitive dissonance is when the company values do not align with your own and you are doing work you find unethical and mind-numbingly boring.
Commuting Hours
Since Covid began this factor hasn’t been so prevalent with homeworking, but consider that on average we spend a third of our lives at work. Add to that the hours you spend on a train, bus, underground, or stuck in traffic each day.
Stagnating at work
Doing the same jobs every day with very little variation can feel like painfully slow growth and many companies fail to offer real progression to staff. It can feel like you are existing in a working hell.
Long hours but no big rewards
Possibly the worst scenario is when your company wants you to work over 50 hours a week, but not reward you properly. The company may be thriving off all your overtime but you aren’t seeing much of the pie.
Affected by Bad Decisions
You have to mop up the aftermath of bad decisions that affect customers and staff alike. Maybe it’s time to become the decision-maker yourself and be your own boss?
